The Power of Persuasion

Every day, people try to persuade us. Advertisements encourage us to buy products, politicians ask for support, and social media influencers recommend new trends. Persuasion is everywhere, and understanding how it works helps us make smarter decisions.

Persuasion means convincing someone to believe or do something. Strong persuasive communication usually combines three important elements:

1. Logic (Logos)

Logical persuasion uses facts, statistics, and evidence. For example, a company might say that its phone battery lasts 20% longer than competitors’ batteries. This type of persuasion appeals to reason.

2. Emotion (Pathos)

Emotional persuasion targets feelings such as happiness, fear, excitement, or sympathy. A charity advertisement may show emotional images to encourage donations.

3. Trust (Ethos)

People are more likely to believe someone they trust. Experts, celebrities, teachers, and doctors often influence public opinion because they appear knowledgeable and reliable.

Persuasion can be positive or negative. It can inspire people to recycle, study harder, or help others. However, it can also spread misinformation or manipulate emotions unfairly.

Because persuasion is so powerful, critical thinking is important. Before accepting a message, people should ask questions:

a) Is the information true?
b) What evidence supports it?
c) Is the speaker trustworthy?
d) Are emotions being used to manipulate the audience?

Learning to recognize persuasive techniques helps students become more independent thinkers and better communicators.

IV. Write Your Own Persuasive Message

Write a short paragraph (100-120 words) persuading students to:

. read more books,
. exercise regularly,
. protect the environment,
. or limit screen time.

Requirements:

. Use at least TWO persuasive techniques.
. Include a clear argument.
. Use strong and convincing language.

Students should exercise regularly because physical activity is essential for a healthy and successful life. Exercise strengthens the body, improves concentration, and reduces stress. Studies show that students who exercise often have more energy and perform better at school. In addition, regular exercise helps prevent health problems and improves self-confidence. Imagine feeling stronger, happier, and more active every day instead of feeling tired and stressed. Many doctors and athletes agree that even thirty minutes of exercise daily can make a huge difference. Instead of spending hours sitting with phones or computers, students should go outside, walk, run, or play sports. Exercise is not only good for the body but also for the mind, and it can greatly improve students’ lives.

Topic:
“Social media influencers have too much influence on teenagers.”

Agree or Disagree

Prepare 2–3 arguments and present them.

Teenagers often copy influencers’ behavior, fashion, and opinions without thinking critically.
Many influencers promote unrealistic beauty standards and luxury lifestyles, which can make teenagers feel insecure or unhappy.
Some influencers advertise products only for money, and teenagers may trust them too easily without checking if the information is true.

V. Find an online advertisement or speech and write a short analysis (150–200 words):

. What persuasive techniques are used?
. Is the message ethical?
. Would you trust it? Why or why not?

An online advertisement I recently saw was a sports shoe commercial on YouTube. The advertisement showed famous athletes training hard, winning competitions, and wearing the company’s shoes. It mainly used Pathos and Ethos as persuasive techniques. Emotional music and exciting scenes created feelings of motivation and success, while famous athletes made the audience trust the product. The advertisement also used a little Logos by mentioning that the shoes are designed with special technology for comfort and speed. The message was partly ethical because it encouraged exercise and healthy living. However, it also suggested that buying the shoes could make people more successful, which is not always true. Advertisements sometimes exaggerate to attract customers. I would trust the advertisement only partly. I trust the athletes and the quality of the product to some extent, but I know the company wants to increase sales. Before buying the shoes, I would also read reviews and compare information from other sources.
